Namaste!

Many of the ubiquitous personalities this world has seen in the last two centuries, have been people who have taken a pause in their academics or professional life. All these personalities took what we now know as a Gap year.

Some took a Gap year or a short break to understand more about themselves, some took it and used their time to travel, some to seek clarity in what to do with themselves and others took a breather and completely changed their subject of choice or profession. You will be simply astounded by these people most of who have left a lasting impact in this world. As I always say, we all must go, let’s leave a footprint in the sands of time, let’s make a small difference in this world. Many of those I mention below were not conscious of the impact of their break which is called formally now as a Gap year or a Gap experience.

In the Indian context or even globally taking a break from academics is frowned upon. But if we use this break in a creative manner to think through what we intend to do with our life, it could be a life changing experience especially if it is a curated experience by a reputed outbound company like Trailblazers – The Outdoor School.

My favourite Gapper is the Father of our Nation Shri Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or more often called Mahatma Gandhi. The name Mahatma is given to him by Shri Rabindranath Tagore. His political mentor was Shri Gopal Krishna Gokhale who advised Gandhiji on his return to India from South Africa after 2 decades, to take a year off (which in today’s term is a Gap year) and travel around India, meet the people, see, listen, learn and that’s exactly what he did. This was the learning and grounding that he transformed and culminated into a freedom movement. He brought about a transformational change across this subcontinent that today is known as India, Pakistan & Bangladesh. This movement of Swaraj a term coined by Shri Lokmanya Tilak resonated worldwide and the next few decades saw almost all the colonies of the West be it in Asia, Africa and South America get their freedom. To me he is the GAPPERS’ Gapper.

The other Greats who took a break from academia or their profession included in this hallowed alumnus are Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, The Beatles, Bill Gates, Angela Davis, Kobe Bryant, Prince William, Mother Teresa, Malia Ann Obama, Aung San Suu Kyi, J. K. Rowling, Nigella Lawson, Ed Sheeran and many of them uniquely spent time in India doing things they would not do, spiritually upgrading themselves and seeking answers before they went on to make the change we have seen their work do.

Gap experience is a time for students or individuals before applying for University or a job, to seek clarity for themselves, to think on what they seek and desire, and to reflect on the journey ahead. They also learn the 21st century skills through immersive experience be it compassion, empathy, communication or leadership skills, learning a new language, doing physical work meeting people from different walks of life, learning to stay and survive alone out of their comfort zone. This kind of opportunity did not exist earlier in India. This curated 4-week experience is available now. I am sure you will be better equipped to face the world armed with this Trailblazing Gap experience.

Be the change you want to see in the world!

ABOUT GAP

What is a Gap Experience and Bridging the Gap seminar?
A gap experience is taken after school before college or after college before starting to work. It is a combination of travel, exploration and learning something totally new that helps you to discover your strengths, interests, boost confidence, self-awareness and independence.

Bridging the Gap is a unique virtual seminar that highlights the positives of taking a Gap experience programme to be able to make a right choice for a career path instead of rushing it in.
More and more American graduates and off late Indian students are doing just that - postponing college to engage in a potentially life-changing gap experience. Ranging from service-learning trips all over the world to organizations closer to home that serve local communities. The benefits of time taken off after high school, regardless of what the students pursue during that year are many.
The benefits of a Gap experience are many. Students who have taken a gap experience are typically more focused, more mature, and are more prepared to take advantage of all the opportunities that higher education affords. The significant confidence and personal growth from taking a gap experience helps them define themselves more clearly from the very start of college. And that in turn, helps them come closer to realizing their own potential as students while in school.
